Koifa
Koifa is a Hakka word meaning to bloom, to blossom.
Rooted in this spirit of becoming, Koifa – Agar Flower Studio creates botanical artworks that celebrate the beauty of nature through a material rarely seen in contemporary craft: agar.
Founded by artist Yi Hsuan Sung, the studio explores the expressive potential of agar, a natural gel derived from red seaweed and long treasured in Asian culinary traditions. Biodegradable, highly moldable, and thermo-reversible, agar offers a unique medium for creating with intention—where transformation is possible, and waste is minimized.
Each flower is meticulously handcrafted, capturing the fleeting grace of a blossom at its most luminous moment. Delicate yet enduring, our creations blur the boundaries between art, nature, and design.
From sculptural interiors to wearable adornments, every piece reflects a commitment to thoughtful craftsmanship and sustainable beauty. No two works are alike; each carries its own character, shaped by hand and inspired by the ever-changing forms of the natural world.
At Koifa, we believe beauty is not only something to admire, but something to cultivate—to bloom, to blossom, and to flourish in harmony with nature.

Yi Hsuan Sung
Yi Hsuan Sung is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose practice explores the relationship between nature, materiality, and craft. She holds an MFA in Textiles from Parsons School of Design, where she developed a deep appreciation for natural materials, organic forms, and the subtle beauty of color and texture found in the natural world.
Working primarily with agar, a biodegradable biomaterial derived from red seaweed, Yi Hsuan creates delicate floral sculptures and adornments that reimagine how we experience nature in everyday life. Her work is guided by a commitment to sustainability, transforming an unexpected material into botanical forms that celebrate both beauty and impermanence.
Through Koifa, she seeks to cultivate a deeper connection between people and the natural world, bringing nature's quiet elegance into contemporary living through thoughtful, handcrafted design.
